Description

One of the main disadvantages of ventilated façade claddings are their typically high weight and cost e.g. in the case of fibre reinforced concrete panels or natural stone claddings. The high weight means high energy costs for transportation and installation. In addition natural stone claddings rely on exploitation of non-renewable resources and concrete panels have a high CO2 footprint.

In this project we will developed ventilated façade claddings based on the geopolymer technology. The panels will be composed out of an outer High Density Geopolymer (HDG) layer (6-8 mm thick) incorporating at least 40-50% of selected CDW and an inner layer (10-15mm thick) Wood-Geopolymer Panel (WGP) incorporating at least 50-60% (by weight) of CDW wood.The panel will weigh ca. 20-30 kg/m2 and have an avarage density of 1.2-1.4 kg/dm3 compared to 2.2-2.5 kg/dm3 for concrete and 2.4-3 kg/dm3 for natural stone (basalt, marble, porphyry, granite).

The role of the HDG layers is to act as both as a protective shield to protect from wind loads, rain, snow/ice and as an aesthetic finishing to define the optics of the building. The role of the WGP layer, monolithically bonded to the HDG layer by a casting process, is to provide the additional mechanical strength to the panel and to allow accommodation of fasteners for mounting on the ventilated façade substructure. The WGP layer will be fabricated using a geopolymer binder mainly formulated with flyash-slag and sodium silicate to reduce the overall cost, and recycled wood chips obtained from CDW through a simple shredding process of wood waste. The WGP layer will be produced with a technique similar to that used for Cement Bonded Oriented Strand Boards (CB-OSB) substituting the Portland cement binder with the geopolymer binder.

Possible additives in the nanotechnology field might be added in order to test the enhancement of the surface properties such as water absorption, self cleaning, anti-bacterial – antimold, thermal behavior, etc. Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), antimony Tin Oxide (ATO) or combination of these TCO with nano-scaled TiO2 and SiO2 oxides produced by AMS providing photocatalytic effects, IR reflective or absorption properties, resulting in bio-protection and thermal insulation improvement, will be tested. The nanoparticles will be added in the final stage of casting on the surface of molds, either in the form of powder or as a solution in order to bond with the geopolymer paste.
